Documentation and Certification for Trolling Motors

Registering Tolling Motors with DMV

All Minn Kota Trolling motors are electric and generally do not require registration with the DMV. We recommend checking with your local DMV to verify you do not need to register your electric trolling motor. If your motor needs to be registered, you can get any needed documentation from your retailer.

Manufacturer Statement of Origin

Manufacturer Statements of Origin do not apply for trolling motors.

The Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) is a document that verifies ownership of a water vessel. You should receive a blank MSO form when you purchase any water vessel. This document is usually found in the owner manual packet.

You may need your MSO as documentation for vessel titles or future sale registers. Requirements to title or register vessels vary by state and so do guidelines for an MSO. You should check your state's requirements to determine if an MSO is needed to title or register your vessel. State parks divisions, fish and game departments and departments of motor vehicles may oversee titles and registration in a particular state.
