AS ETH 5PGL Ethernet Network Troubleshooting

If devices connected through the AS ETH 5PGL are not communicating correctly, start by confirming compatibility and software versions. Then check power, LED activity, network capacity, network layout and Ethernet connections.

Confirm Compatibility

Before troubleshooting, verify that every fish finder and Ethernet accessory connected to the AS ETH 5PGL is compatible and meets the required software version.

Compatible Fish Finders

Fish Finder Software Requirement
A Series All models
APEX Version 4.190 or later
HELIX G3N and HELIX G4N Version 2.890 or later
SOLIX Version 4.190 or later
X Series All models
XPLORE All models

Compatible Ethernet Accessories

  • HB 2124 CHIRP Radar
  • AS ETH NMEA2K
  • i-Pilot Link, Bluetooth models only: Version 1.440 or later
  • Advanced GPS Navigation: Version 2.200 or later
  • MEGA Live Imaging: Version 1.290 or later
  • MEGA Live 2
  • MEGA Live TargetLock: Version 1.180 or later
  • AS ETH 5PGL
  • AS ETH 5PXG

Not Compatible: The AS 360 Imaging (non-MEGA), SM1000, SM2000 and SM3000 are not compatible with the AS ETH 5PGL.

For additional compatibility assistance, use the Minn Kota Integrated System Network Builder.

AS ETH 5PGL Troubleshooting

Check Power

Check the AS ETH 5PGL for a steady amber power light.

Keep in mind:

  • The amber power light indicates that the switch is receiving power.
  • The light can remain illuminated with voltage as low as 6V.
  • For full operation, voltage measured under load must consistently remain at or above 11V.

Important: An illuminated power light does not confirm that adequate voltage is reaching the switch.

Check LED Indicators

Check the lights for ports 1 through 5 for connection and network activity.

Amber Blinking

An amber blinking light can indicate activity from:

  • X Series
  • XPLORE
  • HELIX G3N
  • HELIX G4N
  • Radar
  • AS ETH NMEA2K
  • i-Pilot Link
  • Advanced GPS Navigation
Green Blinking

A green blinking light can indicate activity from:

  • A Series
  • APEX
  • SOLIX
  • MEGA Live
  • MEGA Live TargetLock
  • AS ETH 5PGL
  • AS ETH 5PXG
No Light

No light indicates there is no activity on that port.

Note: Lights on ports 1 through 5 should blink to indicate network activity. A steady port light, other than the power light, may indicate an issue.

Check Network Capacity

Network limits depend on the Ethernet switches installed.

AS ETH 5PGL-Only Network

A network using only AS ETH 5PGL switches supports up to:

  • 6 compatible fish finders
  • 5 daisy-chained AS ETH 5PGL switches
Mixed AS ETH 5PGL and AS ETH 5PXG Network

If an AS ETH 5PXG is installed anywhere on the same network, the lower AS ETH 5PXG network limits apply:

  • Maximum of 4 fish finder units
  • Maximum of 3 daisy-chained switches

Important: Adding an AS ETH 5PGL to an existing AS ETH 5PXG network does not increase the supported capacity of that network.

Check for Multipaths and Network Loops

The network can have only one Ethernet path between connected products.

If multiple paths or a network loop exist between devices, the network will not operate correctly. Check your Ethernet layout and remove any connection that creates a second path between the same networked products.

General Network Troubleshooting

If the network still does not work correctly:

  1. Check Ethernet cables and adapters. Confirm all required Ethernet cables and adapters are installed.
  2. Inspect cables and connectors. Check for cable damage and broken connector pins.
  3. Bypass the AS ETH 5PGL. Connect the devices directly to determine whether they communicate without the switch.
  4. Remove SD and microSD cards. Remove the cards one at a time, testing network operation after each card is removed.
  5. Check for corrupt navigation data. Refer to the corrupt navigation data article for additional troubleshooting.
  6. Check IP addresses. Verify that all networked fish finders have an IP address.
  7. Check Network Info. On A Series, X Series, APEX, XPLORE and SOLIX, an AS ETH 5PXG should appear in Network Info when used.

Important: The AS ETH 5PGL will not appear in Network Info. Do not assume the switch has failed simply because it is not listed.

If the issue continues, capture a screenshot of the System Status or Network Info screen before contacting Technical Support.
