For best performance, a trolling motor should have the appropriate amount of thrust for the size and weight of the boat. When the motor’s thrust does not closely match the boat, Boat Scale can be used to fine‑tune performance.
- The default Boat Scale setting is 0, which assumes the motor and boat are properly matched.
- If the motor is underpowered for the boat, increase the Boat Scale.
- If the motor is overpowered for the boat, decrease the Boat Scale.

Recommended Thrust
Thrust requirements are based on the total weight of the boat when fully loaded, including fuel, passengers, gear, and tackle.
Minn Kota recommends selecting a trolling motor with at least 2 pounds of thrust for every 100 pounds of boat weight. This recommendation reflects typical lake‑fishing conditions and should be used as a general reference when determining whether a motor’s thrust is well matched to the boat.
