Connecting a NMEA 0183 Device

NMEA 0183 allows compatible marine electronics, such as certain VHF radios and autopilots, to exchange supported information with compatible fish finders. Connection requirements vary by fish finder series, so use the sections below to identify the required connection and cable for your model.

Jump To:

A Series and APEX

APEX models have a built-in 5-pin NMEA 0183 connector on the rear of the unit.

Connecting a GPS Receiver or Heading Sensor

When connecting compatible precision GPS accessories such as:

an AS GPS adapter is required.

These sensors include a pigtail wire that can connect to an optional device such as an autopilot. Refer to the applicable GPS/Compass Sensor installation instructions for connection information.

X Series and XPLORE

X Series and XPLORE models do not have a NMEA 0183 connection.

As a result, NMEA 0183 devices such as the SC 110 Autopilot, AS GPS HS and other NMEA 0183 equipment cannot connect through NMEA 0183 to these models.

These series support NMEA 2000-capable devices, such as the NMEA 2000 GPS Heading Sensor.

Important: These fish finders do not send GPS location or heading data over NMEA 2000. Because the fish finder cannot send its GPS location this way, it cannot provide its location to a radio through NMEA 2000.

SOLIX, ONIX and ION

SOLIX, ONIX and ION models have a built-in 14-pin NMEA 0183 connector on the rear of the unit.

The fish finder should indicate whether it supports one or two NMEA 0183 devices. Use AS GPS NMEA - NMEA 0183 Splitter Cable for Humminbird external GPS or GPS + Heading sensors with the NMEA 0183 connect. AS DUAL NMEA - NMEA 0183 Splitter Cable is used when connecting two supported NMEA 0183 devices with pigtail connections.

Follow the operation manual for your specific model for setup instructions.

300, 700, 800, 900, 1100 and HELIX Models

This section applies to:

  • HELIX 7–15 G4N
  • HELIX 7–12 G2N
  • HELIX 7–12 G3N
  • HELIX 9–12
  • 1100 Series
  • 900 Series
  • 800 Series
  • 700 Series
  • 300 Series

If the fish finder has a built-in internal GPS receiver and GPS functionality, an AS HHGPS can be used to connect it to a NMEA 0183 device.

AS HHGPS Wiring

Connections on NMEA 0183 devices vary by product and manufacturer. Refer to the NMEA 0183 device manufacturer's wiring diagram to identify its corresponding wires. Wires listed as Not Used should be terminated so no electrical connection to other wires or devices on the boat are made.

AS HHGPS Cable

NMEA0183 Device Cable

Wire Color Connection Connects Wire Color Connection
RED +12 volt output Not Used Device specific - see devices Owners Manual Not Used
BLACK Ground Connects to Device specific - see devices Owners Manual Ground NMEA Negative (-)
GREEN NMEA Input Not Used Device specific - see devices Owners Manual Not Used
WHITE NMEA Output Connects to Device specific - see devices Owners Manual NMEA Input Positive (+)

Important: Wires identified as Not Used should be terminated so they cannot make an electrical connection with other wires or devices on the boat.

Enable NMEA Output

After completing the connection:

  1. Open the NMEA Output menu.
  2. Set NMEA Output to On.
  3. Once the fish finder has a GPS fix, it will begin transmitting NMEA 0183 data to the connected device.

Connecting Other NMEA 0183 Accessories

For other NMEA 0183 accessories, APEX requires an AS NMEA accessory cable.

NMEA 2000 Compatibility

NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 have different connection and compatibility requirements. Refer to the NMEA 2000 Compatibility when connecting NMEA 2000 devices.
